Magazine Bride #1

2009
Enamel on found paper
7-3/4 x 10-7/16 inches
All fifty or so of the

Magazine Brides

were first exhibited together as part of a solo show titled "Success & Happiness". Like the exhibition,

Magazine Brides

addresses questions of true happiness and meaningful success by looking at the simple subject of making choices. The model bride on each magazine page has been rendered into a silhouette by the application of shiny enamel paint. The figures become abstracted: one silhouette looks like Cinderella, another a nun, a ghost. The work questions commonly beliefs about beauty, identity, individuality, and the institution of marriage. It also highlights the increasing role of commerce in our most personal life events.
