Magazine Brides

Magazine Brides

A series of paintings of shiny white enamel paint on top of found pages from bridal magazines.

The Magazine Brides series were first exhibited together as part of a solo show titled "Success & Happiness." Like the exhibition, Magazine Brides address questions of true happiness and meaningful success by looking at the simple subject of making choices, while highlighting the increasing role of commerce in our most personal life events. The model bride on each magazine page has been rendered into a silhouette by the application of shiny enamel paint. The figures become abstracted: one silhouette looks like Cinderella, another a nun, a ghost. The work questions commonly held beliefs about beauty, identity, individuality, femininity, and the institution of marriage.
